Chinese personalities more diverse than Japanese

When I have business meetings with Chinese people, I find that people's temperament differs greatly depending on where they are from.

There are many different areas where business is good, where people are sincere, and where relationships are strengthened by drinking.

With approximately 1.38 billion people, China has a population equivalent to a country in a single province, and there are more regional differences than we Japanese might imagine.

If you are surprised or perplexed when doing business with Chinese people, it will be easier to understand their way of thinking if you keep in mind their regional temperaments.

(1) Temperament of Beijing people

About Beijing

Beijing (Pékin / Běijīng) is the capital city of the People's Republic of China. It is the representative city of the northern region of China with a permanent population of 21.72 million as of the end of 2016.

The city is neatly laid out in a grid pattern and is both orderly and grandiose. The old buildings, such as the National Palace Museum, exude elegance.

Beijing is a fascinating city where the old and the new coexist.

Between the forested skyscrapers, there still remain old-fashioned streets called hutongs (hútóng).

There are old-fashioned plays called "Peking Opera," and there are also advanced live plays. There are also fashionable bars and folksy tea houses.

The only disappointment is that the climate is not good. Dust and sand fill the city in the spring, extreme heat in the summer, and cold weather in the winter.

Only a short period of time in autumn is pleasant. The blue autumn skies are exceptionally clear and clear because of the harshness of the other seasons.

Personality Tendencies of Pekingese

As the capital of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, Beijing has a privileged environment and history not found in other regions, giving those who grew up in Beijing a sense of superiority.

The local aunts and uncles are well versed in the culture of Beijing, and their mannerisms and behavior reveal a relaxed optimism and humanity.

They are educated, respectful, black and white. They are tolerant, friendly, frank and straightforward.

A strong social consciousness is also ingrained in their daily lives.

In the past, Beijing people were said to value people, respect virtue, and be polite. However, due to rapid modernization, their traditional temperament is declining day by day.

I have the impression that Beijingers are experienced and broadly knowledgeable, just because they live in the nation's capital.

The influence of the bureaucratic culture is strong, and in other words, the culture of the bureaucratic children of the past is still present.

Having lived in an advantageous location with a good vantage point from which to view the world from the perspective of a government official for many years, he has a "make it work" outlook on life.

In business, be fair and impartial and follow the rules. I am principled and do my job properly. He is loyal to his friends and will never do anything black-hearted. He is willing to extend a helping hand to those with whom he has established a relationship of trust, without regard for his own gain or loss. He has a sense of justice.

Traditional Beijingers, who have repeatedly joined forces while viewing the world from on high, have always thought of themselves as being from the center.

Especially in front of people from the countryside, they become arrogant as if they were a department head talking to a section chief.

He is rather irreverent in his words and deeds, and sometimes speaks flippantly and lamely.

Pekingese are always eager to add the character "dai" to everything they do. This is a universal characteristic of Beijingers. In their lives"large (e.g. serving size)"There is always a mindset oflarge (e.g. serving size)Talking (telling a story), lecturinglarge (e.g. serving size)Reasoning (explaining reason), Discussionlarge (e.g. serving size)They want to add the word "big" to everything when they say "problem" (to discuss a problem).

Even chatting is called 侃大山 (kǎn dà shān), with the character for "big" in it. Even tea is served in a Beijing bowl.

Beijing people are not very interested in small-scale, detailed work.

He is a man who longs to be a big bowl (to be famous) and the highest is to be a big official (to be a high-ranking bureaucrat). In China, there is a saying, "If you go to Beijing, you will understand how small you are (不到北京不知道自己官小).

In Beijing, bureaucratic culture, intellectual culture, and popular culture coexist in a multilayered symbiosis, and modern and traditional cultures coexist peacefully.

When Japanese people visit Beijing, they are surprised to hear Beijingers speaking loudly with a unique accent that makes the end of words roll off the tongue. However, this is normal for them, and they live in harmony with each other.

(2) Temperament of Northeasterners (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning)

About the Northeast (Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces)

The capital of Heilongjiang Province (Hēilóngjiāng Shěng) is Harbin. The permanent population was 37.99 million at the end of 2016.

The capital of Jilin Province (Jílín Shěng) is Changchun.

The permanent population was 27.33 million at the end of 2016. The capital of Liaoning Province (Liáoníng shĕng) is Shenyang, and Dalian is another famous city. The permanent population was 43.77 million at the end of 2016.

The Northeast region has many raw materials and resource-based industries.

Personality Tendencies of Northeasterners

Northeasterners worship heroes and feel affinity for those who are brave, strong, and hardworking.

The true nature of the Tōhoku people as a hunting tribe lives on in a different form in the present age of commercial civilization.

The Tōhoku people are arrogant, but also agile. While they are more valiant than wild tigers, fighting until they win, they also have a soft, supple, and hard-boned spirit.

Tohoku people have a stronger desire to make a mark, start a business, and make a name for themselves than people in other regions.

While the gangs in the Tohoku region are vicious robbers and murderers, they are also chivalrous and loyal to their enemies.

When fighting, Northeasterners always take the nearest weapon at hand. If there is a brick on the spot, they never grab a block of earth. If there is an iron stick, they never choose a wooden stick.

Aim for the most damaging place to attack. If you can hit the face, never attack the buttocks. If you can hit him in the solar plexus, never attack his legs.

Another characteristic is that they are kind, fat and manly.

In the Tohoku region, people say to those closest to them, "Please don't talk about money because it will distance our relationship." In Tohoku, people often say to their close friends, "Don't talk about money because it will distance our relationship.

A song by a Chinese singer, Xue Cun, "All Northeasterners Talk about Lei Feng" shows a side of Northeasterners. Even those who do not understand Chinese can understand the atmosphere of the song from the images alone.
https://youtu.be/VImVx8cJCIc

It is said that Northeasterners are 'courageous in battle but timid in business. This means that self-employed people in the Northeast have more business courage than those in southern China.

Many self-employed people in the Tohoku region are small-capitalization businesses and think it is enough if they can feed themselves while running a small business.

They do not take many risks and do not hold reckless ideals and aspirations. For this reason, the self-employed in the Tohoku region are said to be less wealthy than those in other regions.

On the other hand, self-employed people in southern China start small with little capital and gradually expand their business. Once they reach a certain size, they create their own brand products and sell them throughout China, and if the opportunity arises, they expand their sales channels outside of China.

If a person from southern China and a Northeasterner started a business at the same time, the Northeasterner would be left behind in no time. This is something that Northeasterners always feel.

(3) Temperament of Shandong people

About Shandong Province

The capital of Shandong Province (Shāndōng Shěng) is Jinan City. With a permanent population of 99.46 million as of the end of 2016, it is the second most populous province in China, behind Guangdong Province.

GDP is estimated at 7,267.8 billion yuan (about 125 trillion Japanese yen) in 2017, the third largest in China.

Confucius, a thinker of the Spring and Autumn period and the founder of Confucianism, was born in the southern part of Shandong Province (Lu Province). Mount Tai is famous as one of the five sacred mountains of Taoism.

Personality Tendencies of Sandong People

The Santonese are loyal and frank.

Although a little rough on the outside, he is a brilliant and loyal person on the inside. As the birthplace of Confucius, it is steeped in Confucian culture and places great importance on hierarchical relationships in its human relations.

At work, they are good at getting in front of upper management and achieving their goals. Shandong people have a strong sense of hometown and are proud of their hometown, and they can easily recognize their fellow countrymen wherever they are.

Many people who have had business meetings with Shandong people say, "Shandong people are frank, tolerant, simple, unpretentious, sincere, and refreshing." Many of them say, "Shandong people are frank, tolerant, frugal, unpretentious, sincere and refreshing.

It is said that Shandong people have their own ideas but lack a little wit. They are talented in business, but not savvy. They are well educated, but not well-spoken.

Shandong people are strong drinkers. Although they are not the best in the world because there are Northeasterners and Uyghurs who are bottomless drinkers, their vigorous drinking style is as good as Northeasterners and Uyghurs.

When discussing the culture of the Shandong people, one cannot separate it from Confucius. Confucius taught that loyalty, righteousness, faith, and courage are necessary for human beings, and the Shandong people have produced many heroes and heroic figures with a strong sense of manliness and chivalry. They are also kind to the elderly.

Shandong people are said to be a "hard-working tribe" and are the most hard-working people in China. They are not very adventurous. They would rather eat rice crackers at home than go out and look for golden rice grains.

Shandong Province has produced many historically famous politicians, thinkers, military figures, and artists. In particular, during the Spring and Autumn period (770 B.C. to 403 B.C.), there were Hengkong of Qi, Confucius, the founder of the Confucian school of thought, and Sun Tzu (Sun Wu), famous for his military writings. Wu Ki and Sun Bin were also from Shandong, and along with Sun Tzu, they are representative figures of the military family.

When it comes to the world of commerce, however, few major merchants or businessmen have emerged in the past 2,000 years. This is said to be due to the long-term restraints imposed by Confucian culture and the fact that Shandong's economy was under the control of the imperial powers for a long time.

In the past, Shandong people had a traditional notion that it was immoral and shameful to become rich by doing business.

However, the world has changed, and today's Shandong people are remaking their own history. World-class companies such as Qingdao Beer and Haier have been born and are driving the Shandong economy. It is said that a quarter of China's best companies are now based in Shandong Province. Shandong people are bold, discerning, and brave in business.

4) Temperament of Henan people

About Henan Province

The capital of Henan Province (Hénán Shěng) is Zhengzhou City (Zhèngzhōu), with a permanent population of 95.32 million as of the end of 2016. Henan means south of the Yellow River. It is the third most populous province in China after Guangdong and Shandong.

Sōng Shān (嵩山) is home to the famous Shaolin Temple, which is also famous in Japan.

Kaifeng (Kāifēng) has lost its former capital city style, but the fame of Luoyang Peony still conveys the flavor of the Henan people of that time.

Character Tendencies of Henan People

In ancient times, the center of China was the Central Plains. And the center of China was Henan. When Chinese people trace their roots, most of them end up in Henan. The Yellow River basin centering on Henan is the mother of the Chinese people and the cradle of the Chinese nation.

Henan, which was primarily agricultural, has long had a well-developed agrarian economy. In the past, there was a strong tendency to emphasize agriculture and to look down on business. The self-sufficient, small-farm lifestyle fostered an old-fashioned, simple, warm, and kind country sentiment. From a different perspective, however, it can be said that the people clung to old customs and had a strong sense of blockade and conservatism.

With economic development, the old-fashioned small-farmer consciousness is disappearing from Henan people. Young people do not want to live with only a small plot of land and a single cow, and wives are not satisfied with life with only a small child and ondol (underfloor heating). Today's Hanam people are actively participating in market competition.

The Hanam people have long been famous for their frugal lifestyle. They placed importance on "livability and practicality," and many of the residential facilities unique to the Henan region still remain today, including earthen stoves, grass houses, stone slab cells (rooms and walls made of stacked stone slabs), and tianjingguyuan (dwellings made by digging holes).

They are especially careful when it comes to food and drink, eating corn, Gaoliang, and other cereals in small portions while cutting back on white rice and wheat flour. Since the 1980s, the character and habits of the Henan people have changed dramatically. In particular, they have begun to seek a comfortable and well-equipped lifestyle, with a drastic change in the areas of food, clothing, and housing.

Hanam people are very respectful. Not only in daily greetings, but also in picking up and dropping off, lending and borrowing, celebrations, birthdays, weddings, birthdays of the elderly, funerals, etc., they pay great attention to civility and appearance. Those who are knowledgeable and know how to be courteous are respected, and there is a saying that goes, "A person who is courteous is not a strange person.

To treat people with civility, it is necessary to know what you are talking about. It also has the aspect of being exclusive to those who do not show civility.

Henan Province has long been a center of intellectuals as it is the place where the talent of the central Plains gathers. Although the wind and sand have made it impossible to see a panoramic view of Zhengzhou, the provincial capital, the city on the banks of the Yellow River is lush and green, and has long been a commercial center, serving as a hub for transportation and business in the interior of China. This means that Henan people can work.

In their sense of self-importance, Shanghainese look down on people from the outside and call those from the countryside "hometown people (country people). To them, Shanghainese are the only city people, and speaking fluent Shanghainese is like having a gold card and receiving special privileges in the modern world.

(7) Temperament of Fujianese

About Fujian

Fujian Province (Fújiàn Shěng) is located in southeastern China and has a subtropical climate due to its proximity to the Tropic of Cancer. The provincial capital is Fúzhōu. The permanent population was 38.74 million at the end of 2016.

Personality Tendencies of the Fujianese

It is said that Fujianese are "an insect at home but a dragon outside the gate" and Fujianese are strong in the outside world.

He is independent-minded and a man of few words, but a doer. He is good at hard work and is willing to travel to foreign lands for business.

In the outside world, they not only unite with their countrymen, but also travel in cliques and reap a lot of harvest with their high fighting power. Although they may appear to be unsteady, they have the rough and tough spirit of bloodthirsty wolves who have strayed from their pack.

In Pútián, Fujian Province, there is a small town called Zhongmen Township with a population of about 300,000. Many of its residents have left their hometowns to work in the lumber business and have scattered to various port cities throughout China, creating a network of hometown residents that is said to be very strong in the lumber market.

It is a traditional trait of the Fujian people to leave their homeland and pursue development. It is said that there are more than 10 million overseas Chinese and Chinese nationals of Fujian nationality scattered in more than 160 countries around the world.

Fujian Province is a region of intense population flow. Before the Song dynasty (960-1279 A.D.), people from northern China migrated to Fujian in large numbers. After the Song Dynasty, large numbers of people from Fujian migrated overseas and to Taiwan. Many overseas Chinese and Taiwanese have their ancestral roots in Fujian.

The geographical environment has a lot to do with why Fujianis leave their hometowns. Fujian is said to have "eight mountains, one body of water, and one rice field. Fujianis who live in a land of many mountains and little arable land have come to abandon the heavy mountains and seek a place of relief beyond the sea.

Despite the subtropical climate, the character of the Fujianese is anything but passionate. They have a rigid mountain character and a free-spirited sea character.

He is industrious, hard-working, adventurous and quick to adapt. They like to move around in the world and are good at business. Fujianese are good at studying and their reading ability is first-rate. Many of the academicians at the Chinese Academy of Sciences are from Fujian.

The adventurous spirit of the Fujian people is influenced by the history of their ancestors, who fought with intelligence and courage. The people of the Min Nan Min ethnic group, a Han Chinese ethnic group living in large numbers in Fujian Province, are well known in the business world, and many overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia belong to this group.

From the perspective of merchant quality and business spirit, the Minnan people (Mǐnnán rén) are the best in China.

Going out into the outside world and engaging in commerce is the best career choice for the Minan people. Since childhood, they have grown up watching their grandfathers and fathers engage in business in the outside world.

Not only in Minnan, but also in coastal areas such as Fuqing, Changle, and Pingtan, people have been worshipping Western-style activities since ancient times. The famous Minnan song "爱拼才会赢" ("Love, Win, Win") expresses the spirit of risking one's life to win in the end. The two characters "拼" and "赢" (win) represent the brave pioneering spirit of the Min Nan people.

(viii) Temperament of Hebei people

About Hebei Province

The capital of Hebei Province (Héběi Shěng) is Shijiazhuang. The name "Hebei" comes from its location north of the Yellow River. The permanent population was 74.7 million at the end of 2016.

It is the largest producer of grain and cotton in China, with wheat, corn, sorghum, and potatoes as representative grains. Peanuts and sunflowers, which are the raw materials for hemp, tobacco, and cooking oil, are also widely grown. In terms of industry, the coal industry is well known.

Hebei Personality Tendencies

Famous for their simple personalities, the Hebeians may not appear to have a good reputation at first glance, but they are polite, earnest, and unpretentious.

In fact, good Hebei people work hard and live simply at home. Outside the home, they work hard and don't care if people complain about their hard work.

They are sincere and passionate about people and the world, giving the impression of being warm, unpretentious, and honest.

Hebei people like to do everything according to custom and live peacefully even in poverty. They do not have a radical enterprising or adventurous spirit, but are content with a peaceful life.

Unlike other provinces, the Hebei people are a region with few unified characteristics, and their characteristics vary greatly from region to region. It is difficult to describe the Hebeians as a single character because of their disparate characteristics.

To give a concrete example, the people of Zhāngjiākŏu are frugal and serious, but brave like Mongolians. The people of Cangzhou (Cāngzhoū) are as bold and unassuming as Shandong people.

The people of Lángfáng (蘭坊市) are influenced by Beijing and Tianjin, and they are blunt and unassuming.

The people of Hándān (邯鄲市) have the characteristics of four provinces, as it is south of Hebei Province and borders Shanxi, Shandong, and Henan Provinces.

Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province, is the youngest city in China, having developed rapidly in modern times like a fairy tale. Less than half of Shijiazhuang's residents were originally from Shijiazhuang. Most of the residents are migrants from other provinces and cities who came to the newly developed city of Shijiazhuang.

Although Hebei's GDP is among the highest in the country, its average personal income is among the lowest, and it is not a rich province in terms of its economy.

It is said that the reason Hebei's development has been slower than that of other provinces is not only due to geographical factors, but also policy factors.

Hebei is forced to cooperate with Beijing, the capital of neighboring China, in any way possible. When Beijing runs out of electricity, Hebei's electricity is restricted, and when pollution problems are severe, traffic from Hebei to Beijing is restricted. This is a source of concern for Hebei Province.

9) Temperament of Jiangsu and Zhejiang people

About Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces

Jiāngsū Shěng (Jiangsu Province) is located in eastern China at the mouth of the Yangtze River, with the Huaihe (Huaihe River) flowing in the north.

The provincial capital is Nánjīng (南京市) with a permanent population of 79.98 million as of the end of 2016.
Zhejiang Province (Zhèjiāng Shěng) is located south of Jiangsu Province.

The Qiántáng Jiāng River, which flows through the province and covers one-third of its area, makes many twists and turns, which is why it is called Zhejiang. The capital of the province is Hangzhou City (Hángzhōu). The permanent population was 55.9 million as of the end of 2016.

Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces were called Wu and Yue, respectively, during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Period.Yan Zhao Shangwu and Wu Yue ShangwenAs the saying goes, the Yan (near present-day Beijing) and Zhao (parts of Shanxi and Hebei provinces) in northern China respected the martial arts, whereas the Wu Yue respected the written word.

These characteristics are influenced by the local environment, and people in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, who have lived with water, tend to value cleverness and wisdom.

This area has produced many outstanding writers, scholars, and merchants. Lu Xun, a well-known Chinese literary figure in Japan, was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province.

Zhejiang Personality Tendencies

Zhejiang Province is a fertile land that produces good fish and rice, but because there are so many people and so little land, it is constantly exposed to fierce competition for survival.

For this reason, many Zhejiang people do business in the outside world, and among them, the people of Wenzhou City are known throughout the world.

In the midst of fierce competition, Zhejiang people have acquired the wisdom to survive and travel around the world doing business with only their own arms.

Many people from Zhejiang Province work as day laborers or in other day-to-day occupations. It is said that many Zhejiang people are skilled craftsmen who are good at using their brains and have excellent skills. Although it is difficult to live comfortably in Zhejiang Province, surprisingly there are few homeless people.

Zhejiang merchants are famous for being quick-witted and to the point. In the Chinese business world, Zhejiang Merchants are said to be the best at what they do. Incidentally, Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba Group, was born in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province.

Personality Tendencies of Jiangsu People

People think that Jiangsu Province is rich in products due to its large population, but in fact, fish and rice are abundant only in the southern part of Jiangsu Province (Sunan).

Although the area of Sunan is only one-third of that of the northern part (Su-Bei), its economic power is far greater than that of Su-Bei.

One thing that Sunan people and Zhejiang people have in common is that they are quick-witted. Their business and financial skills are also superior to those of other provinces.

A significant number of outstanding figures in Chinese history have come from Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou, known as Su Xi Chang.

The Sunan people are represented by the people of Sūzhōu. They are compassionate, knowledgeable about the world, and adept at calculation. However, they sometimes appear to have a weak personality because they think too much about details.

Compared to Sunan, the economy of Sunan is a little behind.

Historically, the Huai River (the third largest river after the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers) has often flooded Sunan, and each time this happened, the victims went to Sunan to seek work, and the city has taken on manual laborers and rough labor.

In order to survive in a foreign land, the people of the Sunan have united with each other and created factions. This was not well received by the people of the Sunan.

Although Su Bei is prone to flooding, it has a large amount of fertile land and a well-developed humanities and sciences. In particular, the area around Yangzhou City (Yáng zhoū) has long been home to many literati and brilliant people, and is comparable to the area in Sunan.

Incidentally, Jiang Zemin, the fifth president of China, was born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province.
